Food & Drinks on Trekking

What to Expect?

When planning your trek in the mountains of Nepal, it is essential to keep in mind the importance of eating at the guesthouse where you will be staying overnight. This is because the room rates are relatively low, and the primary source of income for guesthouse owners is through food and drink sales to guests.

If you opt for a guided tour, you can expect your guide to handle all aspects of your meals. This includes taking your food order, passing it on to the kitchen, and serving the prepared meal. It is worth noting that guides and helpers do not typically eat with the guests and instead wait for dinner to be served to the staff.

The menu at the guesthouse will have a good variety of Nepali and international dishes. It is recommended to try the local options, as they are the chefs' specialties and are always prepared using fresh ingredients from the garden. You can choose from a wide range of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes. A must-try dish is Dal Bhat, a traditional Nepali meal made of curries, rice, and lentil soup. You can also re-order parts of Dal Bath without any extra charge. Meat dishes are limited in availability. Another delicious option to try is the small dumplings called Momos, which are served with a spicy sauce. For breakfast, you can order an omelette, muesli, pancake or porridge.

If you opt for a package-trek, the meals, including morning coffee or tea, will be included in the price. However, all other drinks must be paid for separately. Along the trek, you can purchase snacks and drinking water nearly everywhere.

It is advisable to bring a refillable water bottle, as water is sold from large tanks to reduce plastic waste in the mountains. However, it is worth noting that prices for these items may be higher than in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Alcohol in the mountains is extremely expensive and should be avoided due to the risk of altitude sickness.

Although the meals are always prepared fresh and with clean ingredients, it is possible for some guests to experience stomach problems. These issues usually pass within 1-2 days and do not have any lasting effects. They are simply a result of the body adjusting to different types of bacteria. If you are trekking with a guide, they will have some light local medicines and can provide them to you if you wish.
