Accommodation on Trek — What to Expect
Honest Tips for a Comfortable Stay
The teahouses along Nepal's trekking routes are one of the things we love most about this country. They are simple, warm, and run by local families who have been welcoming trekkers for generations. They are not hotels — and that is exactly what makes them special.
Here is what you can expect, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
Most teahouses offer simple double or twin rooms with basic furniture — a bed, blankets, and sometimes a small window with a view that will take your breath away. Rooms are not heated, so nights can be quite cold at higher elevations. Warm blankets are always provided, but we would always recommend bringing your own sleeping bag or bed liner for extra warmth and hygiene — bed liners are not changed between every guest. Earplugs are also a worthwhile addition, as the walls tend to be thin.
Many teahouses offer private bathrooms, though some at higher altitudes have shared facilities. Hot water is often solar-heated — which means it may not be available on cloudy days. Some lodges use gas heating, which is more reliable. Our tip: arrive early to maximise your chances of a warm shower. Please also note that towels and toilet paper are not provided — do bring your own.
Some rooms may not have power sockets, but you can almost always charge your devices in the common room for a small fee. WiFi is available at many teahouses, also usually for a small additional charge. Since power cuts can occur, we would always recommend bringing a torch or headlamp.
The evenings in the teahouses are some of our favourite moments on any trek. The common rooms are cosy and warm, with a stove lit in the evenings and fellow trekkers sharing stories from the trail. If you are trekking with one of our guides, they will always keep you company and make sure you feel at home. A pack of cards is also a wonderful thing to bring — the local card games are very competitive and a great deal of fun.
