Mardi Himal Trek — Our Favourite Trek From Pokhara

Colorful prayer flags flutter near a rustic shelter on the Mardi Himal trek, with Machhapuchare (6,993 m) towering behind.

Highlights:

  • Stunning views of the Mardi Himal, Machhapuchhre, and Annapurna South peaks
  • Relatively uncrowded trails compared to other popular treks in the region
  • Passing through forests of rhododendron and oak trees
  • Experience of traditional culture and hospitality of the local people in the villages along the trail
  • The chance to summit Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m) for a panoramic view of the surrounding peaks

The Mardi Himal Trek holds a very special place in our hearts — and we think it will hold one in yours too.

While most trekkers head straight for Annapurna Base Camp, the Mardi Himal trail quietly winds through rhododendron forests and ridgelines with some of the most breathtaking views of Machhapuchare and Annapurna South you will find anywhere in Nepal. And because it is still wonderfully uncrowded, you get to enjoy all of that in peace.

The trek starts from Pokhara and takes 5 to 6 days to complete, reaching a maximum elevation of 4,500 metres at Mardi Himal Base Camp. It is suitable for trekkers of all levels — and we will be with you every step of the way.

    • Trek Description

From Pokhara, the trail takes you through dense rhododendron forests, terraced hillside villages, and quietly spectacular ridgelines that most trekkers never see — because most trekkers go elsewhere.

That is what we love most about this trek. It is unhurried. The paths are peaceful, the teahouse owners know us by name, and somewhere between the forest and the high camp, something shifts. The mountains get closer. The noise of everyday life fades away.

At Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500 m), the views of Machhapuchare, Annapurna South, and the surrounding peaks are among the finest we have ever seen — and we have seen a few. On a clear morning, the sunrise from here is something we genuinely never get tired of.

The trek is suitable for most fitness levels, though a reasonable level of preparation is advisable given the altitude. We will always adapt the pace to suit you — just let us know when you reach out.

    • Trekking Seasons

The Mardi Himal Trek can be enjoyed throughout the year, with each season offering its own character and charm.

      Spring (March to May)

This is one of our favourite times to be on the trail. The rhododendron forests are in full bloom, the mountain views are beautifully clear, and the temperatures are very comfortable — around 20°C (68°F) during the day and 5°C (41°F) at night.

      Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is widely considered the finest season for trekking in Nepal — and we would have to agree. The skies are at their clearest, the air is fresh, and the mountains look truly magnificent. Temperatures are similar to spring, making it a wonderful time to be outdoors.

      Summer (June to August)

The monsoon season brings lush green landscapes and a quieter trail, but also heavy rain, muddy paths, and cloud-covered views. It is possible to trek in summer, but we would gently advise choosing a different season if you have the flexibility.

      Winter (December to February)

Winter is cold and the higher sections of the trail can be icy. Views are sometimes obscured by snow and cloud. That said, the lower parts of the trail remain beautiful and peaceful. Please do reach out and we will advise you on the best options for your dates.

Whatever season you choose, we would always recommend coming well prepared with appropriate clothing and layers. And please feel free to check the weather forecast for Mardi Himal before you pack.

    • What To Pack
