There are places that stay with you long after you leave — and Lumbini is one of them. This is where Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha, was born in 563 BC. It is one of the most sacred sites in the world for Buddhists and a UNESCO World Heritage Site — and yet, what strikes almost every visitor most is not the history, but the quiet.

Part of our Beyond Trekking programme, a visit to Lumbini is a deeply meaningful experience for anyone — regardless of religious background. We are always very honoured to accompany our guests here.

    • Tour Description

At the heart of Lumbini stands the Maya Devi Temple — built on the exact spot where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama over 2,500 years ago.

Surrounding the temple is the Sacred Garden, home to the ancient Bodhi Tree, an Ashoka pillar erected by Emperor Ashoka in 249 BC, and the Mayadevi Pond where the Buddha's mother bathed before his birth. Walking through this space is a quietly moving experience.

Beyond the Sacred Garden, the wider Lumbini complex contains monasteries and temples built by Buddhist communities from countries all over the world — China, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Myanmar, and many more. Each one is a beautiful expression of devotion and craftsmanship, and together they create an atmosphere of extraordinary peace and diversity.

Our tour also includes time for meditative walks through the Lotus Pond and around the World Peace Pagoda, as well as an introduction to the local culture and traditions of the communities who have lived alongside this sacred site for generations.

This is not just a sightseeing trip. It is a passage through history, spirituality, and the quiet beauty of one of the most significant places on earth.

    • What To Pack

Lumbini is a place of spiritual significance and outdoor exploration — so packing thoughtfully will make your visit much more comfortable and respectful. Here is what we recommend:

Comfortable, lightweight clothing for the daytime heat — cotton or breathable synthetics work well. A light jacket or shawl for cooler evenings.

Comfortable walking shoes or sandals suitable for long walks and uneven archaeological sites.

Sun hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen — essential during the warmer months.

Insect repellent — particularly useful in the evenings and near wooded areas.

Reusable water bottle — exploring Lumbini can be extensive and staying hydrated is important.

Camera — the temples, gardens, and monasteries are beautiful and you will want to capture them.

Modest dress — please ensure shoulders and knees are covered as a sign of respect at religious sites. This is very important to us and to the local community.

Cash — for entry fees, small purchases, and donations. Card facilities may be limited outside major hotels.

Personal medications and a small basic first-aid kit.

Travel documents — passport and any relevant insurance.

Please feel free to check the weather forecast for Lumbini before you finalise your packing.
