Lower Mustang Trek — A World Apart

Breathtaking landscapes with Himalayan peaks along the Lower Mustang Trek in Nepal, showcasing unique desert-like terrain.

Highlights:

  • Immerse in the beauty of Marpha Village, encountering the Thakali people and their unique culture.
  • Explore apple farms and sample local products amidst the scenic backdrop of the Himalayas.
  • Visit monasteries and engage with monks and nuns, delving into the spirituality of Buddhism.
  • Witness the majestic Mt. Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges, dominating the horizon.
  • Experience the rugged Tibetan landscape and Trans-Himalayan region, enriched with cultural and religious significance.

Lower Mustang is one of those places that is genuinely difficult to describe. The landscape is unlike anything else in Nepal — dry, dramatic, and ancient, with towering cliffs, deep river canyons, and villages that feel as though time has barely touched them.

This is one of our most special offerings in the Offbeat Annapurna programme, and one we recommend to guests who want to go a little deeper — beyond the well-worn trails and into a part of Nepal that very few visitors ever see. The trek takes 5 to 7 days and starts from Pokhara.

    • Trek Description

The trail takes you north through the dramatic landscapes of the Mustang region — past ancient Buddhist monasteries, traditional Thakali villages, and the windswept high desert terrain that earned this area its reputation as one of Nepal's most extraordinary destinations.

One of the highlights of the trek is the beautiful village of Marpha — a charming, whitewashed settlement famous for its apple orchards and warm hospitality. We always enjoy stopping here, sampling local apple products, and simply taking in the peaceful atmosphere of a village that has welcomed travellers for centuries.

Throughout the trek, the towering peaks of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range are constant companions on the horizon — a breathtaking backdrop to an already remarkable landscape.

The region is also home to the sacred Muktinath Temple, one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in all of Nepal for both Hindus and Buddhists. A visit here is a genuinely moving experience, and one that many of our guests describe as the most memorable moment of the entire trek.

Lower Mustang is accessible to trekkers of most fitness levels — the altitude is significant but the acclimatisation demands are moderate. We will guide you carefully and adapt the pace to suit you throughout.

    • Trekking Seasons

Lower Mustang has a unique advantage over many other treks in Nepal — because it sits in the rain shadow of the Himalayas, it receives far less rainfall than the rest of the country. This makes it one of the few regions that can be trekked comfortably even during the monsoon season.

      Spring (March to May)

One of our favourite times for this trek. Mild and stable weather, temperatures between 10–20°C (50–68°F) during the day, and the landscape coming alive with wildflowers. A wonderful season to be in Mustang.

Summer / Monsoon (June to August)

While the rest of Nepal gets heavy rain, Lower Mustang stays relatively dry thanks to its rain shadow position. Temperatures range from 15–25°C (59–77°F). A great option if your schedule only allows for summer travel — please do reach out and we will advise you on the best approach.

      Autumn (September to November)

Clear skies, crisp air, and spectacular mountain views. Temperatures between 12–20°C (54–68°F) during the day. One of the peak seasons for trekking in Nepal and a wonderful time to be in Mustang.

      Winter (December to February)

Cold and snowy at higher elevations, with daytime temperatures between 5–10°C (41–50°F) and nights well below freezing. Trekking is possible but requires careful preparation. Please feel free to reach out and we will advise you honestly.
