Poon Hill Trek — A Perfect Introduction to the Himalayas

A breathtaking view of pink rhododendron trees in bloom with snow-capped mountains during the Poon Hill trek in Nepal.

Highlights:

  • Sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri peaks from the top of Poon Hill (3,210 m)
  • Magnificent views of the Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre peaks
  • Passing through traditional Gurung villages and terraced farmland
  • Encounter with the lively culture and welcoming hospitality of the local people
  • Breathtaking rhododendron blossom in March and April

The Poon Hill Trek is one of the most loved trekking routes in Nepal — and one we never get tired of recommending. It is accessible for beginners and families, yet the views from the summit and the warmth of the villages along the way make it genuinely memorable for even the most experienced trekkers.

Starting from Nayapul, about an hour from Pokhara, the trek takes 2 to 5 days to complete — though we are very happy to extend it to suit your pace.

    • Trek Description

From Nayapul, the trail winds gently through terraced fields and dense forest, passing through charming villages with teahouses run by local families who have been welcoming trekkers for generations.

One of our favourite stops along the way is Ghorepani — a small village perched on a ridge with stunning views of the Annapurna range. We always recommend spending the night here, so you are ready for the early morning ascent to Poon Hill (3,210 m).

The sunrise from Poon Hill is one of those moments that is genuinely difficult to put into words. As the light slowly touches the peaks of Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, and Machhapuchare, the entire range seems to glow. Many of our guests tell us it is the single most beautiful thing they have ever seen. We agree.

From Ghorepani, the trail continues to Ghandruk — a beautifully preserved Gurung village where you can explore the local monastery, learn about the traditions of the community, and enjoy the kind of warm hospitality that makes trekking in Nepal so special.

This is a wonderful trek for first-timers and families — and we will be with you every step of the way.

    • Trekking Seasons

The Poon Hill Trek is one of the more flexible treks in the Annapurna region and can be enjoyed throughout the year, each season offering something different.

      Spring (March to May)

One of the finest times to be on this trail. The rhododendron forests are in full bloom — a spectacular display of colour — and the mountain views are beautifully clear. Temperatures average around 20°C (68°F), making for very comfortable walking.

      Autumn (September to November)

Our most recommended season. Clear skies, mild temperatures around 20°C (68°F), and stunning panoramic views. The colourful autumn foliage adds another layer of beauty to an already remarkable trail.

      Summer (June to August)

The monsoon season brings lush green landscapes and a quieter, more peaceful trail. For those who do not mind some rain and prefer to avoid the crowds, this can actually be a very rewarding time to trek. Temperatures average around 25°C (77°F).

      Winter (December to February)

A serene and atmospheric time to be on the trail, with snow-capped peaks and very few other trekkers around. Temperatures average around 10°C (50°F) but can drop significantly at night. Good layering is essential. Please do reach out and we will help you prepare well for this season.
