The Most Magical Time to Be on the Trail
Every year between March and April, something extraordinary happens on Nepal's mountain trails. The rhododendron forests — known here as Lali Guras — burst into colour in shades of red, pink, purple, and white, and the whole landscape transforms into something that is genuinely difficult to describe.
We have walked these trails hundreds of times. And every spring, it still takes our breath away.
Nepal's National Flower
The rhododendron holds a very special place in the hearts of the Nepalese people. It is our national flower — a symbol of the country's wild and rugged beauty. With over 30 species found across different altitudes, these flowers are accessible to almost everyone, from casual day visitors to serious trekkers.
The colours vary beautifully depending on the elevation — deep crimson red at lower altitudes, softer pinks and whites higher up. As the morning light filters through the forest and touches the blossoms, the effect is something close to magical.
Beyond their beauty, rhododendrons have deep cultural and ecological roots in Nepal. They are used in traditional medicine, associated with religious rituals, and provide essential habitat for a remarkable variety of wildlife.
Where to See the Rhododendron Blossom

Annapurna Conservation Area
This is our home — and in spring, it is truly at its most beautiful. The trails to
Poon Hill,
Annapurna Base Camp, and the
Annapurna Circuit are lined with rhododendrons in full bloom. Hillsides covered in red, pink, and white, with the Himalayan peaks rising behind them. We never get tired of this.
Langtang National Park
Located north of Kathmandu, Langtang is a wonderful choice for those who want to combine rhododendron forests with dramatic snow-capped scenery. The Langtang Valley trek is particularly beautiful in spring.
Makalu Barun National Park
A hidden gem in eastern Nepal. Quieter trails, pristine wilderness, and rhododendron forests that feel completely untouched. For those who prefer to go off the beaten path, this is a very special destination.
Kanchenjunga Conservation Area
In the far eastern corner of Nepal, the Ghunsa Valley and Taplejung region offer some of the most spectacular rhododendron displays in the entire country. Remote, beautiful, and deeply rewarding.
Rara National Park
Nepal's most remote national park, home to the country's largest lake. The rhododendron forests here are enchanting during blossom season, and the peace and solitude are extraordinary.
Kathmandu Valley
For those with limited time, the Godavari Botanical Garden in Kathmandu offers a wonderful introduction to Nepal's rhododendron varieties without the need for a full trek.
The Best Time to Visit
The rhododendron blossom is at its finest from mid-March to late April. The weather during this period is wonderfully mild, with clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and long days that are perfect for trekking.
