Summer Trekking in Nepal — A Different Kind of Beautiful
May 9, 2024
A Season That Surprises Every Guest Who Comes
Most people plan their Nepal trek for spring or autumn. And those are wonderful seasons, we would never say otherwise. But summer has something that the other seasons simply cannot offer — and the guests who discover it often tell us it was their favourite trip.
The monsoon brings rain, yes. It also brings a Nepal that is lush, quiet, and deeply alive. The rice fields are a vivid green. The waterfalls are at their most powerful. The trails are peaceful. And the mountains, when they reveal themselves through the clouds, feel even more dramatic for it.
Here is our honest guide to trekking in Nepal during summer.
Why We Love Summer Trekking
Lush and Vibrant Landscapes
From June to August, the monsoon rains transform Nepal into something extraordinary. The terraced fields turn deep green, the forests fill with colour, and wildflowers appear along almost every trail. For anyone who loves nature photography or simply wants to experience Nepal in its most alive state, summer is a very special time.
Quiet Trails
Summer is the off-season for trekking, which means fewer crowds. On many routes you will have the trail almost entirely to yourself. For guests who prefer a more reflective and unhurried experience, this is one of the most valuable things the season has to offer.
Rich Flora and Wildlife
Summer is when Nepal's natural world is at its most vibrant. Orchids, rhododendrons, and countless other wildflowers line the trails. The forests are full of birdsong and butterflies. If you are interested in nature and wildlife, this is a wonderful time to be on the trail.
Popular Summer Treks
Annapurna Circuit
The upper sections of the Annapurna Circuit lie in a rain shadow, which means significantly less rainfall than the rest of Nepal. The lower sections are lush and dramatic, and the contrast between the monsoon landscape and the high-altitude desert of the Mustang region is truly remarkable. One of our favourite summer routes.
Lower and Upper Mustang
Mustang sits behind the Himalayan range and receives very little monsoon rainfall. This makes it one of the best destinations in all of Nepal for summer trekking. Ancient monasteries, dramatic cliff landscapes, and a culture that feels untouched by time. If your schedule only allows for summer travel, Mustang is our top recommendation.
Rara Lake
Nepal's largest lake, nestled in the remote northwest of the country in Rara National Park. Its isolated location means fewer rain showers and extraordinary natural beauty. A summer trek to Rara Lake is a genuinely unforgettable experience for those who love wilderness and solitude.
How to Prepare for a Summer Trek
Pack the Right Gear
Waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots with good grip, and a rain cover for your backpack are all essential. The trails can be muddy and slippery after rain, so good footwear makes a real difference. A full packing guide is available on our Trekking Equipment page.
Stay Healthy on the Trail
Leeches are a reality of summer trekking in Nepal, particularly below 2,500 metres in forested areas, but nothing to be too worried about. Long trousers tucked into your socks, leech socks, and insect repellent with DEET are the most effective protection. Along the main trekking routes, clean drinking water is available to buy at teahouses, so staying well hydrated is easy. Just make sure to stick to purchased or boiled water rather than stream water. Trek With a Local Guide
The trails can be harder to navigate during the monsoon, with some paths less clearly marked and conditions changing quickly. A local guide not only keeps you safe but makes the whole experience richer and more meaningful. Please do not hesitate to reach out and we will be happy to help you plan.
Summer trekking in Nepal is not for everyone — and we will always be honest about that. But for those who come with an open mind and a willingness to embrace the rain, it offers something truly special. A Nepal that most visitors never see.
