Getting from Kathmandu to Pokhara — Your Options Explained

Pokhara is where most of our treks begin — and getting here from Kathmandu is the first step of the adventure. The good news is that you have several options, each with its own character and charm.

Here is our honest overview of all of them, so you can choose what suits you best.

Travelling by Road

The road journey from Kathmandu to Pokhara follows the Prithvi Highway, winding along river valleys and hillsides with beautiful views of the Nepali countryside. It is a genuinely scenic route — terraced fields, river gorges, small villages, and occasionally a glimpse of the mountains above.

A few things are worth knowing before you choose this option. The road is currently undergoing significant construction in several sections, which can cause delays. During the monsoon season, landslides occasionally block the highway temporarily. And traffic leaving Kathmandu can be slow, especially during peak hours or public holidays.

That said, many of our guests love the road journey. It is Nepal at its most real — and there is something very satisfying about arriving in Pokhara having watched the landscape change all the way from the valley floor to the lake.

Typical travel time by road is 6 to 8 hours, though it can be longer depending on conditions.

Local Bus

The most affordable option, and a wonderful way to experience everyday Nepali life. Local buses make many stops, are often crowded, and the journey takes longer than other options. Not the most comfortable choice, but full of character. A good option if you are travelling on a tight budget and have plenty of time.

Tourist Bus

A popular choice for most travellers. Tourist buses are comfortable, reliable, and make scheduled stops at restaurants along the way. Some services offer reclining seats, air conditioning, and Wi-Fi. Prices are very reasonable and the journey is generally smooth and enjoyable.

Luxury Tourist Bus

The premium road option, with fully reclining sofa seats and a higher level of service and comfort. A good choice if you want to arrive in Pokhara well-rested and relaxed.

Private Car, Van or Jeep

The most comfortable and flexible road option. A private vehicle allows you to stop where you like, travel at your own pace, and arrive in Pokhara on your own terms. It is the most expensive road option but ideal for families, couples, or anyone who values privacy and convenience. We can arrange this for you, please do not hesitate to ask.

Travelling by Air

For those short on time, flying is by far the quickest way to reach Pokhara. The flight takes just 25 to 30 minutes and on a clear day the views of the Himalayan range from the plane are absolutely breathtaking. It is a wonderful start to any visit to Pokhara.

Several domestic airlines operate this route daily, including Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, and Simrik Airlines. All are well-regarded for safety and service. We recommend booking in advance, especially in peak season, as seats fill up quickly.

One important note: domestic flights in Nepal are weather-dependent, and delays or cancellations do occur, particularly in winter and during the monsoon season. If you have an international connection, we always recommend arriving in

Kathmandu at least a day before your departure flight to give yourself a comfortable buffer.

Which Option Do We Recommend?

Honestly, it depends on your priorities. If you have time and want to experience the journey, the tourist bus or a private car is a wonderful choice. If you are short on time or travelling with young children or elderly family members, flying is the most comfortable and reliable option.

Whatever you choose, Pokhara is waiting — and it is absolutely worth the journey.
