3 Reasons We Love Nepal in Spring

If there is one season we find ourselves recommending again and again, it is spring. March and April in Nepal are something genuinely special — the mountains are clear, the forests are alive with colour, and the whole country feels like it is waking up after a long winter.

Here are the three things that make spring our favourite time to be on the trail.

The Rhododendron Blossom

There is a moment on the Poon Hill Trek in spring when you step into a forest of rhododendrons in full bloom — red, pink, and white blossoms stretching as far as you can see, with the Himalayas rising behind them — and everything goes quiet. We have walked this trail many times. That moment never gets old.

Spring transforms Nepal's mountain forests into something that is genuinely difficult to describe. With over 30 species of rhododendron found across different altitudes, the blossom season touches almost every trekking route in the country — from the lower trails around Pokhara all the way up to the high passes of the Annapurna Circuit.

The weather during this time is wonderfully mild — warm days, cool nights, and clear skies that make every viewpoint feel like a reward.

Local communities celebrate the blooming season with traditional dances and festivals, and the teahouses along the trail are full of warmth and good food. Spring really is Nepal at its most alive.

Perfect Trekking Weather

March and April bring some of the most reliable and comfortable trekking conditions of the entire year. The cold of winter is gone, the monsoon rains have not yet arrived, and the skies are wonderfully clear.

Temperatures range from around 8°C to 30°C (46°F to 86°F) depending on altitude — warm enough to enjoy the trail comfortably during the day, cool enough for a restful sleep at night. The visibility is outstanding, and on a clear morning the mountain views are simply breathtaking.

For us, spring is the season when trekking feels most effortless. The conditions are forgiving, the light is beautiful, and every day on the trail feels like a gift.

Holi — The Festival of Colours

If your visit falls in March, you may be lucky enough to experience Holi — one of the most joyful and vibrant festivals in Nepal. Known as the Festival of Colours, Holi marks the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil.

In Pokhara, the celebrations are wonderful. People fill the streets, throwing coloured powder and splashing water on each other, dancing and singing to traditional music. The atmosphere is full of laughter and warmth — and visitors are always welcome to join in.

The evening before Holi, the traditional Holika Dahan ceremony takes place — a bonfire is lit to mark the burning of the demoness Holika, a deeply meaningful moment in the Hindu tradition.

Holi is also a time for forgiveness and unity. Old disagreements are forgotten, and people come together in the spirit of joy and new beginnings. It is one of those experiences that stays with you long after you come home.

The next Holi festival will be celebrated on 21 March 2027.
