Licensed Guides Are Now Mandatory in Nepal — Here Is What That Means for You
March 20, 2023

The New Rule — and Why We Think It Is a Good One
Effective April 1st, 2023, the Nepalese government made it mandatory for all trekkers to hire a licensed guide when trekking in Nepal. The regulation was introduced to improve safety and reduce the number of accidents on Nepal's mountain trails.
We will be honest — this is a rule we fully support. Trekking in Nepal is extraordinary, but the terrain can be challenging and the weather unpredictable. Every year, trekkers get lost, suffer altitude sickness, or find themselves in situations that could have been avoided with an experienced guide by their side.
A licensed guide knows the terrain, the weather patterns, the best routes, and exactly what to do when something unexpected happens. Beyond safety, they bring the mountains to life — the culture, the stories, the hidden viewpoints, and the warmth of the communities along the trail.
If you are concerned about the additional cost, we would gently encourage you to think of it differently. By hiring a local guide, you are directly supporting a family and contributing to the communities that make trekking in Nepal possible. That, to us, is a very good thing.
Why We Love Having Guides on Every Trek
We have always believed that trekking with a local guide simply makes the experience better — in every way. Here is why:
- Expert knowledge — Our guides have an in-depth understanding of the local culture, history, and traditions, and share these insights naturally throughout the trek.
- Safety — They know the terrain, can navigate difficult conditions, and are trained in first aid and emergency response.
- Language — Our guides speak excellent English and can help you communicate with teahouse owners and local communities along the way.
- Hidden gems — They know the viewpoints, the shortcuts worth taking, and the places that never appear in any guidebook.
- Personalised experience — Every trek is adapted to your pace, your interests, and your fitness level. No two treks are ever quite the same.
- Support for local communities — Every guide hired is a family supported. That matters deeply to us.
- Environmental care — Our guides help guests navigate sensitive areas responsibly and ensure that we always leave the mountains as we found them.
- Cultural sensitivity — They help guests understand and respect local customs, which makes for a richer and more meaningful experience for everyone.
- Joy on the trail — Perhaps most importantly, a great guide makes the whole experience more fun. The stories, the laughter, the moments of shared wonder.
That is what we are here for.
